June 18 (Reuters) - Margins at Boeing's (BA.N) defense unit will look similar in the second quarter to its first-quarter results, Boeing Defense CEO Ted Colbert said Sunday. Margins at its defense unit were negative in the first quarter as Boeing recorded a $245 million pre-tax charge on the KC-46 tanker program. Colbert declined to say whether Boeing would take another charge on the KC-46, which has logged more than $7 billion in losses. He added that there is a “ton of activity” to improve performance at Boeing's defense unit but that it will take time for improvements to be seen. Boeing remains focused on "starting every program the right way," including a contract structure that gives Boeing a "fair shake and healthy business," Colbert said.

Boeing's new Air Force One build is so behind schedule that taxpayers face a $340 million hit. The Air Force said the existing 747 jets may have to keep flying until 2028, per the WSJ. In July, the Air Force said that it didn't expect the first plane— which uses the call sign Air Force One when the President is aboard — to be ready until September 2027, per CNN. The Air Force said the delays could keep them flying as late as the 2028 presidential election, per the Journal. The existing planes cost $70 million more to operate each year than their replacements, according to the Journal.
The two aging 747 jets currently serving as Air Force One when the president is on board came into service during the George H.W. Bush administration. Boeing ’s troubled project to replace Air Force One is getting costlier, both for the plane maker’s shareholders and U.S. taxpayers who will have to pay to keep the president’s aging jets flying longer. The Arlington, Va., aerospace company said it expects to lose $766 million more on the high-profile, years-late project to transform two 747-8 jumbo jets into flying White Houses, bringing its total losses related to the effort to nearly $2 billion, according to securities filings. The additional costs were part of a larger charge that led Boeing to report a $3.3 billion third-quarter loss.
